Situational Awareness – Part 1

This new PPL/IR Europe seminar video was recorded during AERO 2024 at Friedrichshafen in April 2024 by @James_Busby.

In this two-part seminar @Paul_Sherry describes, in detail, the theory behind situation awareness (SA) in this part and in Part 2 uses this very sad incident that occurred at Basel-Mulhouse (LFSB) on 7th December 2016 to analyse the situational awareness aspects of an aeroplane crash.

The video is only available to members of PPL/IR Europe.

Weather Seminar (Part 3) : June 2020

This is the video of the third part of the three-part series of weather seminars delivered in 2020. This video is not publicly available on our YouTube channel but with the permission of the members attending the seminar, it is available to PPL/IR Europe members via this link on the left. Please discuss using the PPL/IR Europe forum.

The specific topics covered were: wind, fog, layers and tops

The resources referred to in the video relating to fog are:

PPL/IR Europe Operational Working Group Advisories. In particular, this is the video on flying the final approach.

Dick Rochfort’s YouTube channel. Many valuable videos for private IFR flying. This is the one with the approach into Frankfurt-Hahn.

IFR Conditions 2 – Fog Types. There are many videos explaining the various mechanisms of fog formation, but this is a good one and covers many types of fog.

Comet MetEd programme. Hundreds of free online courses. These are aimed at the geoscience community, but useful for a pilot looking to understand more about weather and forecasting.

And relating to layers and tops:

Autorouter interpretation guide.

Boldmethod is a good resource of training material. This video relating to tops brings the reality of staying in the clear to life. There are many others…

Simon Keeling’s Weather School and online courses. Learn from a real meteorologist!

Visual Explanation of Meteorological Skew T Log P Sounding Diagrams.Probably one of the clearest explanations of the tool.

Weather Seminar (Part 2) : Jun 2020

This is the video of the second part of the three-part series of weather seminars delivered in 2020. This video is not publicly available on our YouTube channel but with the permission of the members attending the seminar, it is available to PPL/IR Europe members via this link on the left. Please discuss using the PPL/IR Europe forum.

The general topic was “Numerical weather prediction”.
The specific topic was Thunderstorms.

The resources referred to in the video are:

Air Safety Institute. Webinar: Datalink cockpit weather do’s and don’ts. Although US (Nexrad) based, one of the most complete presentations on the topic, and with many practical tips and rules of thumb along with many other safety videos

Golze video showing the features of the system and a realistic view of what datalink weather can achieve in relation to an active cold front.

Garmin Airborne Weather Radar Fundamentals. Webinar with many tips on the use of both ground and airborne radar and gives a good sense of the training and expertise required for the safe use of radar.

Air Safety Institute. Accident case study: Time Lapse. A misunderstanding of the delay inherent to datalink weather.

FAA AC 00-24C: Thunderstorms. Good no-nonsense document.

Weather Seminar (Part 1) : May 2020

The general topic was “Structuring the weather planning process”.
The specific topic was Airframe icing.

The resources referred to in the video are:

NASA Glenn Research Center “A Pilot’s Guide to In-Flight Icing”. Free online course and a must.

Air Safety Institute. Many videos. One good one is “Real Pilot Story: Ambushed by Ice” relating to a C182 encountering severe ice.

Air Safety Foundation Safety Advisory Aircraft Icing.

FAA Advisory Circular AC91-74B Pilot Guide: Flight in Icing Conditions.
